medical & legal advocacy
At YWCA Stepping Stones, we’re here to stand with survivors every step of the way—whether at the hospital, with law enforcement, or in the courtroom. Our trained advocates provide free, confidential support to help you navigate the medical and legal systems with confidence and dignity.
MEDICAL ADVOCACY
If you’ve experienced sexual violence, seeking medical care can feel overwhelming. You don’t have to go alone.
Our trained staff and volunteers are available to accompany you to the hospital and support you during and beyond your medical exam.
Provide support and comfort during hospital visits
A trained advocate will meet you at the hospital to provide comfort and help you feel less alone during your medical exam.
Communicate your needs and concerns to healthcare providers
We will act as your advocate to ensure your questions are answered and your needs are clearly communicated to medical staff.
Explain your rights and available medical options
We’ll walk you through your medical rights, available treatment options, and what to expect—so you can make informed decisions.
Assist with paperwork, follow-up, and medical billing issues
Our support doesn’t end at the hospital. We’ll assist with navigating medical bills, follow-up care, and any concerns that might arise afterward.
LEGAL ADVOCACY
Navigating the legal system can be complex—but you don’t have to do it on your own.
Our legal advocates support you through each stage of the process and help ensure your rights are protected. Our team is here to:
Accompany You to Speak with Law Enforcement
Whether you’re making a report or following up on a case, an advocate can be by your side to offer support, explain the process, and help you feel more in control.
Support During Meetings with the State’s Attorney’s Office
We’ll be with you as you meet with legal professionals, helping you understand your rights, what’s being discussed, and what to expect moving forward.
Attend Court Appointments with You
Going to court can feel intimidating. Our advocates are there to provide emotional support, explain what’s happening, and ensure you don’t have to face it alone.
Connect You with Resources
From no-contact orders to victim compensation programs, we’ll help connect you with resources and services that support your healing and safety.
Stalking No Contact Orders
The Stalking No Contact Order is a civil "stay away" order for victims of stalking who do not have a relationship with the offender. Under an SNCO, the court orders the offender not to have any contact with the survivor.
Civil No Contact Orders
The Civil No Contact Order is a civil "stay away" order for rape survivors who do not have a relationship with the offender. Under a CNCO, the court orders the offender not to have any contact with the survivor.
Crime Victims Compensation
The Crime Victim Compensation Act was established in 1973 with the primary goal of helping to reduce the financial burden imposed on survivors of violent crime and their families. The Illinois Crime Victim Compensation Program can provide up to $45,000 in financial assistance for expenses accrued as a result of a violent crime.
Automated Victim Notification (VINELink)
