Empathy in Action
Step into someone else’s shoes—and come away ready to drive change. Our immersive simulations place teams in the day-to-day realities of poverty or post-incarceration reentry, revealing the systemic barriers and tough choices people face every month. Facilitated debriefs turn “aha” moments into actionable ideas for policy, practice, and advocacy inside your organization and beyond.
ReEntry Simulation
YWCA McLean County's Reentry Simulation is an immersive, half-day exercise that reveals the complex reality of returning to the community after incarceration. Participants step into the role of a “reentrant,” guided by a detailed Life Card outlining criminal history, housing status, employment, and weekly obligations. During four simulated “weeks,” they move between stations—Probation, Court, the Bank, Social Services, and more—each presenting unpredictable hurdles.
By confronting the maze of requirements and resource gaps firsthand, participants gain a deeper understanding of the barriers to stable housing, employment, and compliance. The experience sparks informed discussion on policies and practices that promote successful reintegration and, ultimately, safer, healthier communities for all.
Poverty Simulation
YWCA McLean County's Poverty Simulation is an interactive, role-playing experience that exposes the day-to-day complexity of living with limited resources. Participants are assigned family profiles—single parents, seniors on fixed incomes, multi-generation households—and, during four compressed “weeks,” must secure food, housing, transportation, childcare, and vital services while juggling unexpected crises. Stations such as Employers, Social Services, Utility Companies, Payday Lenders, and Schools mirror real-world systems that can both help and hinder stability.
By confronting the constant trade-offs and systemic hurdles of poverty, participants leave with a clearer understanding of its structural roots and with insights to inform policies and practices that build economic security and community well-being.
