YWCA McLean County Hosting Immersive Reentry Simulation

Bloomington-Normal, IL – YWCA McLean County, the Bloomington/Normal Hub of Envisioning Justice, a project of Illinois Humanities, is hosting a ReEntry Simulation Thursday, March 20, 2025 from 3-5:30 p.m. at the Bloomington Public Library. YWCA is inviting community members, policymakers, and business leaders to participate in its upcoming Reentry Simulation—an immersive experience designed to shed light on the complex barriers individuals face upon returning to their communities after incarceration.

Envisioning Justice is a statewide initiative that harnesses the power of the arts and humanities to examine mass incarceration and foster a more just society. Since 2017, Envisioning Justice has developed free public programs and provided grants to support individuals and organizations working towards systemic change.

Participants will step into the shoes of Reentrants, each provided with a Life Card outlining their criminal history, housing, employment, and the critical tasks they must complete under supervision. Over the course of two hours—simulating four weeks in the life of a returning citizen—participants will navigate essential services such as Probation, Court, the Bank, and Social Services, each with its own set of challenges and unpredictable hurdles.

Why Attend?

  • Policy & Practice Insights: This hands-on experience offers a deeper understanding of the systemic obstacles—such as restricted housing and employment options—that impact successful reintegration. It sparks ideas for improving policies, workplace practices, and community support systems.
  • Community Building: Successful reentry benefits more than just individuals. By supporting returning citizens, we reduce recidivism, strengthen neighborhoods, and create safer, more resilient communities.

“Reentry is about more than just serving time—it’s about ensuring people have the tools and support to rebuild their lives,” said Kara Powell, Director of Labyrinth at YWCA McLean County. “This simulation is a powerful way for our community to step into the reality of what so many face and to inspire meaningful change.”
